Ambassador to Malay denies knowledge of any Maldivian ship hijacked

Maldivian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Mohamed Fahmy Hassan has said that the High Commission had not received any information regarding any Maldivian ship hijacked in Malaysia, after Thulhaadhoo MP Nazim Rashad commented during Tuesday’s People’s Majlis sitting that a Maldivian ship was hijacked and threatened in Malaysia on July.

Fahmy spoke to “Sun” and said that the High Commission had not received any information regarding any such incident.

“The High Commission has no knowledge that such an incident took place here in Malaysia,” said Fahmy.

Speaking during the Majlis sitting, MP Nazim said that a State was established and Cabinet ministers and ambassadors appointed to serve the people of Maldives. But, he said that such officials performed negligently in some cases.

“Honorable Speaker, what happened was a ship which belongs to a Maldivian company, with the Maldivian flag hoisted, was hijacked in Malaysian harbor. Since Maldives has a High Commission in Malaysia, the said Maldivian company reported it to the High Commission. After the ship was rescued, the hijackers then threatened to sink the ship,” said Nazim.

He said that the incident was reported to Singapore Marine Police after the hijackers threatened to sink the ship and kill everyone onboard. And that the police rushed to their assistance within five minutes it was reported, monitored the situation and rescued the ship.

“But the High Commission in Malaysia has made no comment regarding the incident, one month past when it took place. To this day,” said Nazim.
