People’s Majlis, on Tuesday, provided their backing to former government minister Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) – nominated as the new Maldivian Ambassador to Japan by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
All 63 lawmakers who participated in the voting provided their approval to Mundhu.
Article 115 (l) of Maldivian Constitution states that state ambassadors to foreign countries and international organizations can be appointed only after consulting with People’s Majlis.
Mundhu will replace Ahmed Khaleel – whose term as Ambassador to Japan has expired.
Mundhu had served as Minister of Youth and Sports in former Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s Cabinet, and as Minister of Presidents Office in President Yameen’s Cabinet.
He resigned from the post on October 25, 2015.
