Companies have been contracted to build and upgrade waste management centers in eight islands.
The contracts were signed between the companies and Ministry of Environment on Sunday.
The Small Scale Waste to Energy Project is run in Addu City, and is funded through loan from Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and state budget.
Ministry of Environment said that though the project is based in Addu, it will be expanded to include Fuvahmulah and G. Dh. And G. A. Atoll.
The islands, the companies and the cost:
• G. Dh. Hoadehdhoo Waste Management Center: Contracted to ISF Construction Private Limited for MVR 1.76 million
• G. Dh. Nadellaa Waste Management Center: Contracted to ISF Construction Private Limited for MVR 971,000
• G. Dh. Fiyori Waste Management Center: Contracted to Thashisha Private Limited for MVR 1.2 million
• G. A. Kondey Waste Management Center: Contracted to Wellman Maldives Private Limited for MVR 779,000
• R. Hulhudhu’ffaaru Waste Dump upgrade: Contracted to Wellman Maldives Private Limited for MVR 671,000
• R. Ungoofaaru Waste Dump upgrade: Contracted to Wellman Maldives Private Limited for MVR 338,000
• B. Kendhoo Waste Dump upgrade: Contracted to Wellman Maldives Private Limited for MVR 552,000
• Incinerator in L. Gan Waste Management Center: Contracted to Interlock Construction Private Limited for MVR 976,000
Minister of Environment, Toriq Ibrahim said that the projects would be completed by end of this year, or beginning of 2017.
He said that it was the aim of the government to establish safe waste management systems in all inhabited islands of the country by end of 2018.
