MDP National Council member arrested under court order

A member of the opposition MDP’s National Council, Anwar Ibrahim, has been arrested tonight with a court order.

Information Officer of the Police, Ismail Ali told Sun Media tonight that Anwar was arrested around 7:30 p.m. tonight.

He said that Anwar was arrested for calling to a mass gathering at places where mass gatherings have been banned and speaking in support of disobeying the orders of Police.

While Anwar has been arrested tonight, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has ratified the Anti-Defamation bill today, a bill that constricts the freedom of expression which was passed from the Parliament on Tuesday.

An amendment was recently presented to the Parliament that would require permission from the Police to hold protest rallies and other gatherings in Malé City.
