Police has ordered former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and former State Minister of Ministry of Home Affairs Akram Kamalluddin 14 days to present themselves to police headquarters for questioning in an ongoing investigation.
Police are investigating allegations that Jameel and Akram were involved in the attempt to arrest President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom using a bogus court order.
Earlier attempt by police to hand over the letter summoning them for questioning was foiled as both Dr. Jameel and Akram Kamalluddin are out of the country.
Police issued a statement this Thursday in which it said that Jameel and Akram would be given the opportunity to speak in their defense regarding the allegation against them if they presented themselves to the police headquarters within 14 days, starting from August 4.
The statement warned that police would take necessary legal action if they failed to present themselves within the given time period.
Chief Magistrate of A. Dh. Maamingili Court Ahmed Nihan and former Prosecutor General Muhuthaaz Muhsin have been sentence to 17 years in prison after they were found guilty in the attempt to arrest President.
An anonymous witness who testified in court during their trial alleged that Jameel and Akram had been behind the attempt.
