EU: E-voting "odd" for a country of 350K people

European Union has said that introducing an e-voting system to Maldives when the country only has a population of 350,000 people was “odd”.

The comment was made in a tweet sent out by the EU mission in Maldives on Tuesday.

EU said in their tweet that Elections Commission needed to first increase confidence introducing an e-voting system would strengthen the democracy of the country.

EU’s comment that an e-voting wasn’t suitable for a country with such a small population comes after EC announced it was making preparations to implement and use e-voting in the upcoming Local Elections.

EC said that the e-voting system cannot be hacked, and would boost the confidence people had in the Commission.

Meanwhile, former President of EC, Fuwad Tawfeeq made comments similar to EC’s stand on the matter in an earlier interview to “Sun”.

Fuwad said that people needed to have strong faith in Elections Commission for e-voting to work, and the Maldivian people simply did not have the confidence.

He also said that e-voting was not necessary for a country with such a small population.
