Civil Court said on Sunday that it cannot Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) lawmakers’ request for a hold on PPM leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s instructions not to hold any committee meeting without his permission.
Maumon had already retracted his instructions on July 14, instructing all PPM committees to carry out business as per usual in accordance with the party’s constitution.
The request for Civil Court to issue a hold on Maumoon’s decision to personally monitor over committee meetings was made by PPM lawmakers – Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam and
Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid in a lawsuit they filed with the court.
The case is currently at dispute resolution stage, before it goes to trial is no solution is found.
The meeting held at court on Sunday was attended on behalf of Shiyam and Shahid by their lawyer Ahmed Zaneen Adam, and on behalf of PPM by Deputy Secretary-General Abdul Aleem.
An official from PPM who spoke to “Sun” was that the motivation behind Maumoon’s instructions at the time was very clear.
He said that PPM Deputy Secretary-General had been communicating with State Home Minister Yoosuf Abdul Gafoor, Deputy Health Minister Mohamed Rafeeq Hassan and State Islamic Minister Ali Waheed Abdul Rahmeen – after noticing that their decisions deviated from the decisions of PPM Disciplinary Committee.
He said that PPM had noted to court that it was a conflict of issue for a member of PPM Appeals Committee – Zaneen – to be representing the lawsuit against PPM when all Disciplinary Committee decisions are sent next to Appeals Committee.
The next meeting in the case will be held on July 19, at 1:30 pm.
Shiyam and Shahid have asked in their lawsuit for the court to declare the Advisory
Committee by Maumoon to enforce his reform agenda had been set up in violation of PPM Constitution.
