Maldivian United Opposition (MUO) has cancelled the gathering scheduled for Thursday night due to bad weather.
The opposition had insisted the gathering would be held even though Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure had cancelled the permission given to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to hold the gathering in the Carnival.
Deputy Chairperson of MDP Ali Niyaz said that the gathering was cancelled as it had been raining in Male’ since Thursday afternoon.
Niyaz said that a date for the gathering would be announced later, and that they would hold the gathering with permission of Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure.
Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said during a press conference held on Thursday morning that they made the decision to cancel the permission given to MDP as they had given permission for MDP to hold a gathering, and not the “unlawful” organization Maldives United Opposition.
Police had also sent a letter to MDP ordering them not to hold the gathering.
