Former President of the Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that “Qis?s” (right to retaliatory killing for the murder victim's nearest relatives) cannot be claimed outside the Islamic Law.
A tweet sent out by the former President yesterday said that no Muslim state has the right to for a Qis?s or death sentence outside the Islamic Law.
Maumoon made the comment after the Supreme Court supported the death sentence for Hussain Humaam by the lower court for the murder of popular religious scholar and MP, Dr. Afrasheem Ali.
While the Supreme Court supports the death sentence, the next of kin of Dr. Afrasheem, his father, Ali Zafir and brother Abdul Naasir Ali has said that they do not want the death sentence for Humaam since the investigation is not yet complete.
They took the letter to the Supreme Court on the night of the hearing but was refused since it was not the official hours of the Court.
