Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has gone to People’s Majlis Government Oversight Committee in an effort to stop Dr. Afrasheem Ali murder convict – Hussain Humam from being executed.
The letter sent to the Committee, signed by North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla says that even police had said before that Humam had been contracted to murder Afrasheem but that they people behind the contract remained a mystery, with no proper investigation carried out.
Afrasheem’s father and brother had sent a letter asking state to but a hold in Humam’s execution until the people behind the murder were discovered and brought to justice.
The letter, sent the night Humam lost the last stage of appeal, was rejected by Supreme Court as it was sent after office hours.
MDP said that Humam’s death sentence was upheld by Supreme Court regardless of the wishes of Afrasheem’s heirs, who don’t want Humam to be executed until the investigation was complete.
Adding that Humam’s death sentence was upheld by the court at 2 am – after office hours – while Afrasheem’s family’s letter was sent before that, and rejected.
MDP noted that whether they wanted ‘an eye for an eye’ was something the heirs had the right to decide.
“We present this issue to the Committee make a decision regarding revision of government’s decision to execute Humam based on these reasons. And stop government from executing him,” read the letter sent by MDP.
