Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dhunya Maumoon as called the referendum held in UK to decide whether to remain in or exit European Union was a clear demonstration of democracy in action.
She made the remark in a statement released by Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday after the results of the referendum came through.
“The EU Referendum in the UK yesterday was a clear demonstration of democracy in action; a historic verdict by the people and for the people, to leave the EU,” said Dhunya.
Results of the referendum show 52 percent of the people voted to leave EU, and 48 percent voted to remain a member of EU.
Dhunya said that the referendum showed the commitment of people of UK to determine their own future and to assert their sovereignty.
She said in the statement that UK was an important bilateral partner of Maldives, and was one of the countries that supplied the country with the most number of tourists.
Dhunya noted that Maldivian government had been working closely with UK in strengthening the country’s partnership with EU, Commonwealth and other multilateral forums, in strengthening democracy in the country, and in finding solutions to global challenges such as climate change.
She said that the government would continue to work closely with UK both bilaterally and through multilateral arenas.
Meanwhile in UK, Prime Minister David Cameron has said he will resign from his post within a three-month period given the defeat in Brexit poll.
He campaigned for the country to remain a member of EU.
