Ibrahim Ameen, brother of popular Islamic scholar and politician Dr. Afrasheem Ali, said that Afrasheem’s murder convict – Hussain Humam Ahmed needed to be kept alive until those who funded the murder come to light.
Speaking in an interview with “Sun” on Friday, Ameen said that there was layer upon layer covering the truth behind the murder.
“We believe this is hidden beneath layers. There are people in each layer. In one layer there’s the people who went to murder him. Those who planned it, those who funded it, and the people needed to carry out the task – these are all layers. We therefore want all these people to be caught and punished,” said Ameen.
Ameen said that Humam had already named a few individuals involved in the murder, and that the people behind the murder needed to be caught through them.
He said that he believed police had the capability to find out the people behind the murder.
“I do not believe for one instance that the people behind the murder cannot be found out. We believe they had not been caught because they don’t want to catch them,” said Ameen.
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Humam lost the last stage of appeal in the early hours of Friday, with Supreme Court upholding the death sentence issued by Criminal Court and supported by High Court.
He may be the first convict whose death sentence is carried out in Maldives in 60 years.
