"Farivaa" has said that the fire at their store on 20 January 2016 was due to the negligence of the State Electric Company (STELCO) and has filed a case at the Civil Court for MVR 33 million in damages.
Sources say that the Court could not solve the issue at the dispute stage and so has been sent to trial. "Farivaa" said that since the fire started at the STELCO electric box, the fault lies with STELCO.
In an interview with Sun Media on the day of the fire, the owner of the Farivaa store, the son of (Mahuma) Hussain Rasheed, Hassan Asif said that the fire started after the STELCO box near the store sparked.
While the Police has completed the investigation and closed the file, Police said that despite the accusations from some people saying that the STELCO box was the cause of the fire, there has been no evidence to support it. And the investigation is inconclusive on intentional arson.
The two story store was completely burned down in the fire that started at 4 a.m. on the night of 19 January 2016. Although no one was injured, a house next to the store sustained some damages in the fire.
