The news of the resignation of the Minister with the most “Guts” on the cabinet, Umar Naseer from his position as the Home Minister, which came through Twitter, surprised a great many people. Umar is among the first ministers to be appointed when President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom got elected.
While he sent in his resignation, Umar Naseer had started an important work to maintain peace in the Maldives by issuing Monitor and Control (MoniCon) orders against gangs and started a rehabilitation camp for minors involved with gangs. He is also one of the people who pushed for the death sentence in the Maldives.
Although there was no direct indication towards resigning at his interview with Sun Media a few days ago, some of the things he said, upon further dissection, do point to it at some level.
Then Home Minister had directly spoken of his ministerial colleagues and challenged them. And said that he wanted to shape the country based on justice and equality and had succeeded in his work.
Umar said that what he believes is an ideology and even if the colour, name or thinking of the party changes, his own beliefs would not change. And he said that even if he is a government minister or not, he would remain the same.
The Home Minister then said that he has achieved delivering his message to some people but his work would be fully successful when he becomes the President.
At the interview, he said that he would allow President Yameen to run for a second term and run for the President in 2023.
“I will come out with this torch in 2023.” Umar Naseer said. “If the people doesn’t believe that year as well, I will come against at the next election.”
