Machchangolhi MP Mariya Ahmed Didi has publicised a plea, requesting the Prosecutor General and Judges to conduct an investigation into suspicions of participation by President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik in a coup.
The book which consists of 23 points based on the Timeline published by the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), refers to articles 30 and 33 of the penal code and claims that President Waheed was involved in a coup.
The former Director of Public Prosecution and the first Maldivian female attorney made the claims and publicised the plea last night at a ceremony held at Male’ City Hall.
Mariya said that this issue should be given serious thought by PG Ahmed Muiz, as it is a criminal offence.
“These are criminal accusations. Criminal claims can only be made by PG. He is not someone who listens only to some people. I hope that he and Judges think about this issue. I also hope that other attorneys will investigate this matter, and that the public will make a petition. I will keep working on this.”
Mariya also said that the Timeline by CNI has enough evidence to prove in court that President Waheed participated in a coup.
Mariya’s book of claims has been presented to MDP and is on sale for Rf25. It refers to article 30 of the penal code and says that the punishment for any person who plans to overthrow a government and uses weapons to do so, is life imprisonment or banishment. As sequences 29, 30, 31, and 32 includes all types of coups as defined in article 33 of the penal code, President Waheed is accused of participating in a coup.
She further claims that no legal action was taken against those involved in throwing objects at MNDF Headquarters on 7 February, and that President Waheed is accused of having participated in a coup because the former President was forced to resign, following which President Waheed formed a unity government without holding elections.
Mariya’s main claim is that President Waheed collaborated with the coalition group, encouraged them, and cooperated with a certain group of people without consulting former President Mohamed Nasheed on any issue.
