Zakat collection begins

Ministry of Islamic Affairs have begun the year’s Zakat (form of alms-giving in Islam) collection.

The collection points for the Zakat are the Islamic Ministry and Housing Development Corporation and the City Councils in the islands.

Islamic Ministry said that collection would be open on weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. up to 3 July.

The Zakat rate is of 2.4 kilograms of rice grain per person. The Zakat is to be given based on the type of rice that are normally being used a particular household.

And so if a person in Malé City is paying Zakat in ordinary rice, it is MVR 12. From Thailand rice is MVR 65 and MVR 77 Basmati rice.

The Ministry said that the Councils would be collecting on the rate of which the rice is being sold in that island.
