Dhunya: Opposition alliance isn’t a challenge for government

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dhunya Maumoon said on Wednesday that opposition parties announcing an alliance was not a challenge for the Maldivian government.

Dhunya made the statement in a press conference by the ministry, in which she said that opposition political parties holding activities was the norm in a democracy, and that opposition announcing an alliance was therefore no problem.

Maldivian opposition politicians staying in UK announced an alliance on Wednesday, making former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed their leader.

Dhunya said that opposition parties announcing an alliance to face a strong government was not something new.

“This can be seen in the history of other countries as well as Maldives,” said Dhunya.

She said that an opposition alliance was of no challenge to the government. And that the government was receiving great success in their work.

“The international community knows the challenges we face. Policy dialogue with EU alone proves that international community is ready to assist, once they know the government’s commitment as details of the plans,” said Dhunya.

Dhunya said that news of the opposition alliance reached her through the media. But that government had not officially received any confirmation, or details of the arrangement.
