A man, who took photographs of L. Kunanandhoo School Leading Teacher Abdulla Mauroof being arrested and taken away was also arrested by police Sunday night, said Kunahandhoo Council.
President of Kunahandhoo Council, Asmau Abu Bakr spoke to “Sun” on Monday and identified the man arrested taking photo of the arrest as Mohamed Ashraf, Finifenmaage, L. Kunahandhoo.
“Mohamed Ashraf was arrested and is now being kept at L. Maamendhoo Police Station. His offense was stated as taking photographs of Abdulla Mauroof’s arrest,” said Asmau.
Police media official said that he would clarify the issue and inform the media.
Taking photographs of such a scene is not a criminal offense.
A similar incident took place on May 20, when a woman taking photographs of police towing away vehicles near Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital was arrested.
The woman was kept under arrest for two hours and then later released, saying she had not committed a criminal offense.
The woman has filed a complaint with Police Integrity Commission (PIC) regarding the issue.
Kunahandhoo School Leading Teacher Abdulla Mauroof was arrested by a large team of police officers who went to the island near midnight, Sunday night.
He is suspected of being a top recruiter in the country for terrorist organization – Islamic State (IS) – and of having links with numerous international terrorist organizations.
