Nasheed

The letter of resignation written by former President Mohamed Nasheed, addressed to Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid, has been leaked on social media.

The letter dated 7 February 2012, handwritten by Nasheed on state letterhead, reads, “Considering the situation in the country, I believe great damage might be caused to the people and the country if I remain President. I therefore submit by resignation as President of Maldives.”

The timeline of events of how the government changed, published by the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) stated that Nasheed wrote this letter at the President’s Office.

Nasheed has told many versions of the story, one of which is that he wrote the letter at MNDF Headquarters.

When photos were leaked of him writing the letter at the podium in President’s Office, Nasheed said that he no longer could recall where he wrote the letter.
