President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the right to freedom of expression is not about expressing oneself without any limits or restrictions.
The President made this statement while addressing the people of Eydhafushi at Bahiyya Preschool.
The President said that there are limits to every form of freedom, and that freedom of expression is practiced in other democratic countries in the world such that it does not restrict the freedom of other individuals.
He said that in Maldives, people misuse this right and say whatever that comes to mind at other people, and that the true benefits of democracy can only be enjoyed by resolving this problem. He said that Maldivians will not be able to live peaceful lives until then, and expressed hope that the Parliament will address this issue and revise the relevant laws.
“People misuse the right to freedom of expression and yell whatever words that come to mind at other people. You have seen and heard this, not just on TV or radio, but on the streets, in front of houses and schools. This is not how it should be. I hope that the Parliament will address this issue and revise the relevant laws to resolve this problem.”
