Maldives Correctional Service has gone back on its decision to allow an extension of 30 days for convicted former Maldivian President and opposition political leader Mohamed Nasheed to stay in UK to receive medical care.
Speaking to press on Monday, Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Husham said that MSC made the decision because Nasheed’s lawyers keep saying that he does not need surgery.
Husham said that Nasheed’s lawyers were saying he did not need surgery, while its written in medical documents submitted by Nasheed that he is to undergo surgery on April 19.
“It’s written in medical documents he submitted that he will be undergoing surgery on April 19. But his lawyers are saying now that he does not need to undergo any such surgery. That he will not undergo any surgery. If so, we do not believe it necessary to give an extension,” said Husham.
He said that based on what Nasheed’s lawyers were saying now, it needed to be checked whether the medical documents submitted by Nasheed were indeed authentic.
When asked whether Nasheed could be awarded an extension again, Husham said that it could be possible in accordance with set procedure on such matters.
Speaking during the ceremony held on Sunday to inaugurate G. A. Gemanafushi harbor, President Abdulla Yameen said that Nasheed had informed MCS that he was to be admitted for a surgery on Tuesday.
A statement which led to Nasheed’s lawyer and Youth and Sports Minister during his administration, Hassan Latheef to call Yameen a liar.
