President Abdulla Yameen has asked Economic Council to review the new electricity charges in face of complaints of high electricity bills.
Yameen, who is on a trip to inaugurate development projects in G. A. Atoll, said during his visit to G. A. Kanduhulhudhoo on Sunday that he was aware of the peoples distress over high electricity bills, and that he had therefore asked Economic Council to review electricity charges.
“I am aware that numerous citizens are facing difficulties due to high electricity charges. I was made aware of this during my stay out of the country and asked a (parliament) member to send me some bills. I came here after asking Economic Council to review electricity charges. To take a look at it again. To research it. To see if there are any issues or anything we may have overlooked,” said Yameen.
He said that Economic Council would finish reviewing electricity charges within this week. And that the government would bring about changes for the best, after that.
Yameen also noted that higher oil prices made it necessary to increase electricity charges.
Higher electricity bills due to the recent change has led to protests in some Maldivian islands.
