President has made a request to resolve the concerns of the journalists on the Anti-Defamation bill

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has made a request to address and resolve the concerns of the journalists regarding the bill of Anti-Defamation and Freedom of Expression at the Parliament.

The Majority Leader of the Parliament, MP for the ViliMalé constituency, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik told Sun Media today that the President has received the petition from the journalists with 183 signatures from 11 media outlets of the country.

“An acceptable result would be seen if all involve provide support in the established system. This is a good example of that.” MP Nihan said.

He said that drafting a bill and passing it as it is to a law through the parliament is not the best way. And he said that he would not say that his bill is a top notch bill.

The Majority Leader said that journalism is an important power at a developing democracy.

He said that the bill’s work would then resume after “toning down” as much as possible.
