Group of thugs attack and injure MP Riyaz Rasheed

A group of unidentified thugs attacked Riyaz Rasheed, Member of Parliament for Vilufushi Constituency, last night while he was on the way home from a meeting of the opposition Joint Parliamentary Group.

Riyaz, the President of Qawmee Party Parliamentary Group and one of the most outspoken opposition leaders, was attacked last night around 2:30 am. He said that he was stopped near the postal building area by a group of thugs “who did not seem to be in sane condition” and attacked. He sustained various injuries including face cuts. His car was also substantially damaged.

According to Riyaz, when he turned to Husnuheena Magu, the thugs were already mugging two people, and he had to stop the car until they made way. However, seeing Riyaz’s car, they came over to him, started banging on his car and ordering him to get out. “They started giving warnings and I got out. One of them was lying down before the car”, Riyaz said. “One of them hit me several times on my face and leg with flying kicks.

Riyaz sought treatment at ADK Hospital, and he reported the incident to the police. He said that the police were already investigating the matter.
