Heavy rain floods houses in Addu City

Heavy rain in some islands of Addu City has resulted in flood water entering houses.

Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq (Soabe) informed “Sun” that heavy rain hit Addu City at 10 pm on Wednesday and had flooded streets and some houses.

“Rain was heaviest at dawn. And Met Office has now issued a yellow alert,” said Soabe.

Soabe said that flooding meant that classes in some schools in Addu City had to be cancelled.

The rain had hit heaviest on Hithadhoo and Feydhoo.

Yellow alert has been issued by National Meteorological Center to southern atolls – G. A. Atoll, G. Dh. Atoll, Fuvahmulah and Addu City from 7:45 am to 11:45 am – when the weather is expected to be at its worst.

The recent flooding comes after heavy rains resulting in flooding in Addu City in November, 2015 caused severe damage to households.
