Government invites Commonwealth to appoint Special Envoy to Maldives

The Maldivian Government has invited the Commonwealth to appoint a Special Envoy for the Maldives to help the country in accelerating its democratisation process.

Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon extended the invitation while briefing the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) at the Group’s meeting held in London today.

The Foreign Ministry reports that Minister Dunya and Attorney General Mohamed Anil also briefed the CMAG about the Government’s on-going collaboration with the UN and the European Union in further strengthening the justice sector.

The CMAG was briefed on by the Foreign Minister about the on-going activities implemented by the Government in countering the emerging threats of terrorism and violent extremism.

Minister Dunya and Attorney General Anil reiterated the President’s commitment to work with the Commonwealth in consolidating democracy in the Maldives.

Foreign Minister Dunya stated that the Commonwealth’s continued interest in the Maldives is a good thing for the country’s on-going democratisation process and that the Maldivian Government is committed to promoting and protecting the fundamental political values of the Commonwealth.
