Parliament’s Committee for Independent Institutes have approved the name presented by the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent for the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
The President sent the name, Ahmed Ameen, S. Hithadhoo for approval for the NIC. After being interviewed by the Committee for Independent Institutes, Ameen received 83 percent marks. Committee approval is from 75 percent.
The Committee considers the education, training, experience, capacity, talent and integrity when approving people for independent institutes.
Article 9 of the NIC states that the committee must consist of five members appointed by the President under the advisement of the Parliament. NIC currently consists of four members approved on 13 October 2015.
Four independent structures of the state, Police, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Maldives Correctional Service and Maldives Customs Service are under the regulatory law of National Integrity. Responsibilities of the NIC include oversight of law enforcement institutes and investigating unlawful actions by the institutes and their employees. And if reports of such activities or reports of suspicions of such activities are reported to NIC, they are compelled to investigate.
