Gender equality bill has been proposed to People’s Majlis on Tuesday.
The bill, proposed by Central Mafannu representative Asma Rasheed states that it is a right provided in Article 17 of Constitution there must not be any discrimination in providing basic rights and independence based on gender. And that it was stated in Article 20 that all protection and incentives provided through law without any discrimination was the right of all.
The purpose of gender equality bill is to ensure that the basic rights provided through Constitution and laws are received by everyone without any discrimination based on gender.
The bill states that it needs to be taken in the context of the Constitution and Islamic law.
The bill makes it an offense to either directly or indirectly discriminate anyone based on gender.
The bill also states that specifying certain kind of jobs for a particular gender would also be considered as gender discrimination.
The bill which includes 46 Articles states that there should not be any discrimination in hiring employees or giving promotions to employees based on gender, and that there should not be any discrimination based on gender in providing salaries, overtime, incentives and allowances between two employees if they do the same work.
It also states that media needs to promote gender equality and that it was the responsibility of State and political parties to provide equal opportunities for males and females in politics.
It states that employees need to apologize via an official letter to the damaged party in case of any violations. And that guilty employees need to enforce steps to rectify their mistakes within 30 days and send an official letter to the damaged party. The damaged party also has the right to file a lawsuit if the mistakes aren’t rectified within 60 days.
