President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that it is a principal aim of the government to bring environmental threats faced by the Maldives to the attention of the international community.
In a statement by the President on the occasion of the World Environment Day, President Waheed said that efforts will be made at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 20 to 22 June, to obtain the cooperation and assistance of the international community in relation to problems arising from climate change faced by Maldives.
He said that it is also the government’s aim to create awareness in relation to energy issues, and to promote the production of environmentally friendly forms of energy, and that this was the purpose of creating a Ministry of Environment and Energy.
Referring to the theme of this year’s Environment Day ‘Green Economy: Does it include you?’, he said that this theme reminds us of the importance we should give to environmental issues.
He said that as the world advances in terms of technology, importance should be given to the production of environment friendly products.
