Man convicted to 10 years in jail for attacking with machete

Criminal Court has convicted one of the four men arrested for attacking a youth with a machete inside Billabong International High School to 10 years in prison.

The verdict was meted out against Ali Rifan from H. Shaiban.

Ali Aksar Ahmed from S. Hithadhoo was attacked with a machete on November 16, 2014.

Aksar was waiting outside Billabong when the four-people mob came after him with a machete, prompting him to run into the school in fear.

The whole attack played out inform of Billabong students and their parents as the time coincided with the time school ended for the day.

Criminal Court ruled that witness testimony proved that Rifan attacked the victim and that he was arrested from inside the school.

And that DNA profile of victim matched with DNA profile done on blood found on Rifan’s shirt.

Rifan was sentenced based on Article 2 (a) and Article 7 (b) of the old Anti-terror Act.

The other three people charged in relation to the incident – Fassan Waleed from G. A. Dhaandhoo, Shaibaan Zufrath Ismail from H. Rosendale and Ulyan Ahmed from G. Dh. Gaddoo – walked free.
