United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Hugo Swire arrived in Maldives on an official visit on Sunday.
Originally scheduled to arrive in Maldives on Saturday night, the trip was delayed to Sunday morning.
No government source has been officially forthcoming with the purpose of Swire’s visit.
However, minutes after Maldivian Foreign Ministry tweeted about Swire’s visit, Foreign Ministry sent out a second tweet to announce that imprisoned former Maldivian President Mohamed
Nasheed had been granted permission to travel to UK for medical care.
Swire’s visit comes after Maldives was recently visited by Indian Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Sri Lankan Ravi Karunanayake – all on official capacity.
The officials met with President Abdulla Yameen during their visit and discussed the current political situation in Maldives.
