Judge Al-Usthaz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed was appointed chief justice of the southern branch of High Court on Sunday.
Supreme Court decreed that Judge Abdul Ghanee was appointed to the post in accordance with Article 35 (f) of Courts Act, the criteria made compulsory by law for a judge to fit into, Article 141 of Constitution and judiciary rules and regulations.
Supreme Court judges had voted unanimously in approval of the decision.
Judge Abdul Ghanee’s appointment comes after the post lay vacant with the retirement of former chief judge of High Court – southern branch; Judge Abbas Shareef.
Other judges that make up the southern branch of High Court are Judge Dr. Azmiranda Zahira and Judge Shuaib Hussain Zakariyya.
Southern branch of High Court remains to be established despite judges being appointed to the branch. This has left southern atolls – Addu City, Fuvahmulah and G.A and G.Dh denied of the right to appeal sentences.
