Ministry of Education has announced that all schools in Malé will be operated in two sessions from next year onwards.
Out of the public schools in Malé, Hiriya School, Thaajuddin School, and Aminiya School were single-session schools until the end of the academic year 2015.
Minister of State for Education Ahmed Shafeeu told Sun Media that the change is necessary because the number of students joining Grade 1 in 2016 is higher than the number leaving Grade 10 at the end of 2015.
He said that without the two-session system, it would not have been possible to accommodate all new students.
Over 2,200 students have applied to join Grade 1 in schools in Malé in 2016, and this number is expected to increase with more applications from families moving to Malé from the islands.
Shafeeu encouraged more students to join schools in Hulhumalé and Vilimalé, as they are not full.
