Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq (Soabe) has said that flooding from the torrential rain that is hitting Addu City has resulted in huge losses to residents of Feydhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo.
In an interview to “Sun” on Wednesday, Soabe said that flooding in Maradhoo-Feydhoo and two areas in Feydhoo has resulted in damage to many belongings, including refrigerators, bedrooms and sofas – things that people cannot do without.
Soabe said that the reason the reason why flooding affected homes and belongings was because the pipe designed to keep the water out had been damaged.
“This issue hadn’t come up some time back because we used pipes to prevent flooding. The reason why this suddenly became such a big issue was due to a problem to the system designed to prevent flooding,” he said.
Soabe said that though residents of Feydhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo were suffering damage to their possessions due to the rain, residents of Hithadhoo had suffered no damage to their possessions.
He said that police and army officers were working non-stop to help the residents of the affected areas by using sacks of sand to stop water from getting into households, and by trying to drain the water.
Soabe said that City Council would be reviewing steps taken to prevent flooding during the rain and their effectiveness, and discussing ways to find better solutions.
“We will, god willing, work on finding solutions based on that. Right now, police and MNDF are working without sleep,” he said.
