President’s office says on Wednesday that the government is considering to send the the matter of renaming the island Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll to the parliament. The island council has requested the government to change the island's name to its previous name, "Havaruthinadhoo".
President's Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair said that after having a discussion in the cabinet on the report of the delegation sent to Thinadhoo on that matter, the government may decide to send the matter to the parliament for a decision.
"The report has been received by the cabinet office, but no meeting has been held to discuss on the issue yet. So it will be decided only after a cabinet meeting whether to send the matter to the parliament. It is possible that the cabinet will decide to find a solution for the issue within the parliament," said Zuhair.
“Havaruthinadhoo” was the island’s name 32 years ago. The name was changed to Thinadhoo by the former president Maumoon Abdul Qayoom on 27th June 1979, while speaking to the people of the island.
