Opposition MDP has requested to guarantee the rights of the former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb.
The party issued a press release today saying that Adheeb was one of the closest people to President Abdulla Yamin and was appointed and dismissed as the Vice President by President Yamin himself. And now Adheeb is in jail due to the accusations by President Yamin.
“Since we have noticed that the investigation of Ahmed Adheeb is not going with the rights guaranteed by the Constitution to him as a person detained in suspicion of a crime, this party raises concerns on the matter.” The MDP statement said.
The MDP statement said that the Government has impeded the former Vice President’s right to an attorney and the party is concerned about it. And so MDP said that head lawyer on Adheeb’s legal team, the former Deputy Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem has been suspended by the Supreme Court and has revoked his right to meet his client.
“With concern we note that the right to an attorney guaranteed by the Constitution to Ahmed Adheeb has been violated.” MDP statement said.
MDP raised concerns about the biased proceeding at the Criminal Court and High Court during Adheeb’s hearings. And they pointed out in their statement that Adheeb was not brought to any of the courts in person.
“Contrary to that, the case proceeded through video conference with Adheeb at Dhoonidhoo. And while his lawyer was not allowed to be at his side, with concern we note that Adheeb was not given the right to private consultation.” MDP said.
MDP said that the Police have impeded family visitations as well. The opposition party said that the opportunity for a private meeting with the family has been closed for Adheeb and he is allowed speaking to his family via phone from a separate room in the presence of two officers and that has never been done before by the Police.
“The other big concern in Adheeb’s case is building a branch of the Criminal Court in Dhoonidhoo. While Dhoonidhoo is an uninhabited island, and it is under the Police, a detention center, the legal authenticity of a court on the island and the independence of such a court is questionable.” MDP said.
While MDP has released a statement calling to guarantee the rights of the former Vice President Adheeb, the case against Adheeb for possession of a firearm was sent to the Prosecutor General’s office today.
