Police: The original document of President Nasheed

Maldives Police Service has said that the original document given by the Maldives Correctional Service to transfer the former President Nasheed to house arrest, while serving a 13-year prison sentence, has been acquired by the Police and it is being looked into.

The Police Media Official told Sun Media that Nasheed’s family handed over the document to the Police on Thursday.

The Correctional Services asked the Police on 24 August to authenticate the document given to President Nasheed. From that point until this day, the Police have not said anything about the progress in investigation.

Back then, the Police said that the investigation to authenticate the document is underway.

Correctional Services issued a statement regarding the rumours of President Nasheed being transferred to house arrest saying that President Nasheed was transferred to house arrest for eight weeks. And that he was taken back to prison with the expiration of that time period.

“While Mohamed Nasheed, G. Canaryge, was temporarily moved to house arrest for 8 (eight) weeks, this institute did not issue any document regarding the sentence passed on While Mohamed Nasheed, G. Canaryge.” The statement from the Maldives Correctional Service said.

Under the advisement of his doctors to keep him in a “stress free environment”, former President Mohamed Nasheed was transferred to house arrest on 21 June. The Correctional Service said that the former President was transferred back to prison two months later after reviewing the reports from doctors.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison for ordering the arrest of the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Judge Abdulla Mohamed as the Commander in Chief.
