Shameem: No-confidence vote against Adheeb was taken in violation of the Constitution

Former-Vice President Ahmed Adheeb’s lawyer, Hussain Shameem has said that the vote to impeach the Vice President was taken in violation of the Constitution.

Speaking to the press after returning from his visit to Sri Lanka, lawyer Shameem said that Adheeb was not aware that a State of Emergency was declared and the time period to respond at the Parliament was reduced to seven days.

Shameem said that if a change to the notification duration has been approved, another seven-day notice has to be issued.

While the President of the Parliament, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed has said that Adheeb refused to attend the Parliament session, Shameem said that the Police refuse to take Adheeb to the Parliament.

“Some people are indicating that he did not attend the Parliament, it’s not that he didn’t attend. He was not taken to the Parliament. For example, people who are detained are taken to Court; it’s not that they go on their own free will. Someone has to take him. If he leaves on his own, it would be a crime.” Shameem said.

He said that the proceedings of the no-confidence vote went very suddenly and it was not a vote within the Constitution.

Vice President Adheeb was impeached at the Parliament session today with the unanimous vote of the 61 MPs present.

Leader of the PPM Parliamentary Group, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik said that Adheeb’s impeachment was a victory to the nation.
