MNDF: The device found near Muliaage was a Stick Dynamite

Police and MNDF have begun a special joint operation in Malé City. The Information Officer of the Police, Ismail Ali told Sun Media that a special joint operation is ongoing in the area of the Presidential Palace (Muliaage) and the Parliament, and the Stadium area. Police have closed down the area between Ghiyasuddin School and the road behind the Military Base, Kalhuthukalaa Koshi (K.K). A Sun Journalist who witnessed it said that the Special Operation (S.O) Police Officers at the scene look stressed. All the pedestrians and people have been cleared from the area and a fire truck is placed near the Mifco tuna shop. Some people who were at the Stadium area said that the Police and MNDF officers are active in the area after receiving a threat.

MNDF said that the IED had antennas that could detonate the device remotely. And said that the device has now been defused and is working to safely destroy it and the case has been handed over to the Police to continue the investigation.

MNDF said that the IED was hidden wrapped in a t-shirt inside the battery compartment of a white pickup truck parked in front of Hithigasdhoshuge-aage on Nooraanee Magu. When the device was discovered around 5 p.m., it was decided to take the device to the most open ground in Malé, the Stadium in the safest way to the people and places and so it was taken there.

The device was moved to Maafannu Stadium since the device might detonate and cause more damage in an attempt to disable the device on scene.

MNDF said then when the information about an IED on a pickup truck parked on Nooraanee Magu came in to MNDF Intelligence around 4 p.m., it was confirmed to be an IED after it was found and a stick dynamite was used to detonate it.

This device was a very strong device. If something like this is detonated, the damage would be major. These things are usually used to blast inside mountains.

When we examined the device we knew to detonate the IED was a Stick dynamite. In it’s nature causes a very strong explosion.

Then, our EOD team worked to disable it. And so our EOD team has disabled the device.

Captain Ihsaan said that once the device was found, Police assistance was requested for the MNDF personnel in the area and then the area was cleared and the device was safely to the Maafannu Stadium.
