Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed transferred to State Minister post

Hussain Waheed has been dismissed from the post of Commissioner of Police, and appointed as Minister of State for Housing and Infrastructure.

This has been confirmed by President’s Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali.

Muaz also said that the responsibilities of Commissioner of Police have been handed over to Head of Police Intelligence Ahmed Areef.

The changes made are:

- Hussain Waheed appointed as State Minister

- Responsibilities of Commissioner of Police handed over to Areef

- Deputy Commissioner of Police Hassan Habeeb appointed as Deputy Minister of Housing and Infrastructure

- Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohamed Sadig appointed as Deputy Minister of Law and Gender

Areef has also been promoted from Assistant Commissioner to Deputy Commissioner.

Hussain Waheed recently took leave unexpectedly, and is presently in Singapore.

He received his education in the area of leadership from the Scottish Police College. He has also received training from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and has served Maldives Police for 24 years.

Hussain Waheed, who is said to be a close aide of Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, was appointed as Commissioner of Police on 19 November 2013.

He served as Assistant Commissioner in former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government, and as Deputy Commissioner in former President Mohamed Waheed’s government.
