Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muiz has submitted the case of Dharubaaruge to the Police following City Council’s failure to hand over Dharubaaruge to the government, and also to Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) because employees are denied their rights as a result of this.
“We were advised by the cabinet to submit the issue to those responsible for implementation. It’s up to them to decide how they want to deal with the matter, professionally. I have sent the case to the Police,” Dr Muiz said.
City Council’s employees of Dharubaaruge have been transferred to Housing Ministry, following the decision to transfer Dharubaaruge to the government. Muiz said that Dharubaaruge staff, since 16 April, have to stay out in the sun every day after reporting to work. He noted that this is a loss of employee rights, thus the case has been filed to HRCM.
“Eighteen civil service employees of Dharubaaruge have to stay out in the sun every day after reporting to work. They can’t enter Dharubaaruge to work. So whether it’s City Council or another institution, they are denying these employees their rights. This has been presented to HRCM as well,” the Minister said.
City Council changed their first decision to hand over Dharubaaruge to Housing Ministry, and submitted to court a case regarding letter sent by Housing Minister to the Council.
Discussions, initiated by Local Government Authority, are ongoing between the government and City Council. They have so far not resulted in a positive outcome.
