Violence erupts between the supporters of Maaenbudhoo and Hulhudheli

A number of people have been injured after violence erupted between the supporters of Dh. Maaendbudhoo and Hulhudheli after a football match between the two islands in the Independent 50 Championship.

The incident took place while the Hulhudheli team was on their way to the harbor to leave the hosts, Maaenbudhoo after the match.

Police Media Official told Sun Media that Police and locals were sustained different levels of injuries in the violence that erupted between the supports of the two islands after the match in Maaenbudhoo. The Official said that no arrests have been made so far.

President of the Hulhudheli Island Council, Adam Zahir told Sun Media that while their team and supporters were on their way to leave the island, people from Maaenbudhoo threw stones at them and started a fight. Councilor Zahir said that women and old men who went to Maaenbudhoo to support the team also got injured in the conflict and one of them has been taken to Dh. Kudahuvadhoo in serious condition.

An estimated 500 people from Hulhudheli went to Maaenbudhoo to support their island team. The spectators went on six boats from the island. All but one boat has now returned to Hulhudheli.

President of the Maaenbudhoo Island Council, Abdul-Rasheed Ibrahim said that no violence erupted in the island today but a conflict took place between the supporters of the two islands. He said that the incident was not related to the football match.

At the incident that took place at dusk today, 15 Police officers were involved in controlling the violence.

Maaenbudhoo won the match today against Hulhudheli by 2-0 in the Independent 50 Championship.
