Adhalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla – who state has charged with terrorism – has been transferred to house arrest.
The decision was made during the hearing held at Criminal Court on Monday.
Imran was charged with terrorism and arrested after state accused him on inciting violence during his speech at the rally organized by the opposition on May 1, 2015.
He was transferred to house arrest and then again taken to prison based on intelligence information the police received.
Speaking during the hearing, he noted that police had been ordered to pay close attention to his health and medical needs when he was transferred to prison.
He accused police of disobeying the order and said that they had rejected his repeated pleas to consult a doctor, and that they had also rejected doctor’s advice to keep him unshackled.
He said that his BP, blood sugar and cholesterol levels were high; but that police had also refused doctor’s instructions to have tests done on him.
The chief judge presiding over the case, Judge Abdul Baaree Yoosuf said that state had failed to comply with orders to keep a regular eye on Imran’s health when he was transferred to prison. And that he had therefore decided that he be transferred to house arrest.
Judge Baaree said that Imran was to inform police of any visits to consult a doctor and that he was to be taken to see the doctor under police escort. He warned Imran that he would be transferred back to prison if he failed to comply.
