Work on two new generators will be completed in two weeks: STELCO

STELCO has said that the work on two new generators will be completed within the next two weeks.

They have indicated that installation of the two generators worth €28m should solve the electricity problem in Male’.

STELCO media coordinator Ibrahim Raoof said that earlier, the deadline to complete the work was 20 May, but this could not be met due to technical difficulties.

“If the technical problems cannot be solved, there is a chance that work may be delayed. But the new period given by them to complete the work is two weeks,” Raoof said.

He said that power cuts are enforced in Male’ because electricity production is not enough. Current generators in Male’ generate 36MW of energy, while 39MW is required in Male’.

“The two new generators will be a complete solution to this problem,” Raoof said.

Each of the new generators will generate 8MW, resulting in the provision of electricity in Male’ without any problem.

STELCO said that the work began in 2009 by a joint venture between German and Danish companies, and was supposed to be completed in 18 months, however has been delayed due to various reasons.
