The former Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has called to respect the decision made by the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD).
In a tweet from the England, the former Vice President said that this is the “Time for Maldives government to obey internationally recognised standard of due process & rule of law.”
“I call upon the current Govt to respect the rulings made by UNWGAD. It would not diminish national sovereignty or authority of the Govt.” The former VP tweeted.
The former VP also criticized the Judicial System regarding the President Nasheed’s case saying that the WGAD’s decision “clearly demonstrate the flawed criminal trial & sentence” against the former President Mohamed Nasheed. Former VP Jameel also accused President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom saying that the President “manipulates the judicial & legal system to annihilate his political opponents.”
The rulings & opinions expressed by UNWGAD clearly demonstrate the flawed criminal trial & sentence against former Prez Nasheed.

A statement from the Foreign Ministry raised concerns as to whether enough priority was given to the conditions set upon the Government of Maldives by the WGAD.
The statement said that President Nasheed’s case is an active case in the Maldivian Judiciary System and said that no matter whose case it is, a Government cannot intervene an active case. And if the Government acts as such, it would be influencing the case.
