India permits export of seven types of commodities to Maldives

The Indian government has given permission to export seven types of general commodities to Maldives.

Normally, nine types of products are permitted by India to be exported to Maldives.

The Indian High Commission said that subsequent to a request by the Maldivian government, quotas have been issued from 2012 to 2014 to export sugar, eggs, potatoes, onions, flour, rice, and material used in construction. Under the quota, these products will be exported to Maldives even if production is low or export is restricted in India.

India gives quota for products required in Maldives following a bilateral agreement made in 1981. Since last year, the quotas need to renewed once every three years.
