Maldivian Democracy Party (MDP) Haruge – or their main station – located on Ameenee magu has been taken over by Maldives National Chamber of Commerce.
Vice President of Maldives National Chamber of Commerce Ismail Asif said that the space belongs to the Chamber of Commerce, and was leased to MDP without any agreement.
“We did not draw up an agreement when we leased the space to MDP. It was given for their use until we needed to use it again,” Asif said.
He also said that the space is required now to construct a financial centre, and that the space is currently under the supervision of the Chamber of Commerce.
MDP Spokesperson and Maafannu Uthuru MP Imthiyaz Fahmy said that he needed to discuss the matter with party leaders before he could comment, and this had not yet been possible as MDP Interim Chairperson and Hulhuhenveiru MP Reeko Moosa Manik’s phone had been switched off.
The Chamber of Commerce said earlier that they were considering building something beneficial to the institution at the space where MDP Haruge was located. For example, a Chinese Company had expressed interest to establish an institution similar to the World Trade Centre in Sri Lanka at this location.
