Minister of Foreign Affairs Dunya Maumoon has on behalf of the Maldivian government attended the summit on countering Islamic State (IS) and violent extremism, on the sidelines of the ongoing 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Foreign Ministry said that the Leaders’ Summit, chaired by President of the United States Barack Obama, follows the UN Security Council session he chaired in 2014 concerning foreign terrorist fighters and the White House Summit on Countering Violent Extremism that took place in February 2015.
Dunya noted, “Terrorism has no geographical parameters, nor is it restricted to one country or region. We all agree that the threat of ISIL is global. Maldives is committed to play its part in the global strategy that is required to combat and counter extremism.”
Some 60 heads of states belonging to the international coalition in the fight against IS and countering violent extremism were present at the summit.
