MDP holds march calling for government

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has held their usual Friday march, calling for the resignation of government officials.

Participants of the march, held in capital Male’, called for the resignation of President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and other senior officials of the government, and said that they had came to power through a coup.

The march commenced at around 17:00 at Usfasgandu, and was led by former Home Minister Hassan Afeef, former Education Minister Shifa Mohamed, MDP Members of Parliament, and members of MDP National Congress.

They first went out to Majeedee magu, then on to Boduthakurufaanu magu, before ending the march back at Usfasgandu at around sunset. A large crowd of MDP supporters joined the march.

Protesters today also mocked President Waheed, by making sounds which they said impersonate the President. Two protesters were dressed as crows. The caw of a crow was heard amidst calls for the President’s resignation and an early election.

As the crowd neared Kalhuthukkalaa koshi, Police came out armed with shields. No confrontations took place, however protesters did stop in this area to shout ‘traitors!’ at the Police. Offensive language was also heard.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed did not join today’s ‘Friday march’, as he is away in Baa Atoll.
