Parliament observes minute of silence for the late Abdulla Hameed

The parliament has observed a minute of silence for state dignitary the late Abdulla Hameed.

Hameed served as Speaker of the Parliament, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, and Member of Parliament appointed by the President.

Announcing the minute of silence, Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Maseeh said that Hameed was a man of high moral standards and a prominent figure in Maldivian history.

Maseeh said that Hameed was a capable, honest, talented, and visionary leader who made great contributions to the development of the country through the government, parliament, and the justice system.

Hameed passed away on Tuesday.

He was the older half-brother of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and the younger brother of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

He began his employment in the government on 28 May 1952, serving longest in the atolls administration department. He has served as Deputy Minister of Provincial Affairs, Minister of Provincial Affairs, Minister of Atolls Administration, and Minister of Atolls Development.

Other posts he took on include Minister of Education and Minister of State for Cultural Affairs. Later on, Hameed was appointed as Senior Minister at the President’s Office.
